Every pattern I create starts with a little spark of joy and when it’s for a Spoonflower Design Challenge, that joy meets purpose! Here’s a cheerful behind-the-scenes peek at how I go from an idea to a full, seamless design.
First things first I read the challenge theme like it’s a treasure map. I look for keywords, color notes, and any size requirements. Even if the design comes from my imagination, understanding the prompt gives it direction and focus.
Before I even sketch, I ask myself: How do I want this design to feel? What kind of energy do I want it to carry? Is it soft and dreamy? Bold and energetic? I choose colors, textures, and a vibe that matches the story I want to tell. I also imagine where this design might live maybe on textiles, maybe home décor!
This is my favorite part opening my sketchbook and letting ideas flow! I start building the design like a little universe:
• Main motifs first (the stars of the show)
• Supporting elements like fillers, lines, and tiny accents
I think of it as creating not just a pattern, but the beginning of a whole collection.
Once the sketch feels right, I bring it to life! Some motifs are best painted in watercolor, others work better digitally. Sometimes I mix both! The size, detail, and texture usually guide me on whether it’s a watercolor day or a digital day or both.
With all the elements ready, I move into pattern mode. I used to create repeats in Procreate (still love it!) but lately, I’ve been using the Seamless Pattern Tester from Amanda Grace Design. It’s magical. Testing repeats became fun instead of fussy, and my designs now click into place with ease.
Whether it’s for a challenge or just because inspiration struck, my process always starts with joy and ends with a pattern ready to bloom on fabric, wallpaper, or wherever it’s meant to shine.
What’s your favorite part of the creative process?
