How to Prepare Your Acrylic Paintings for Selling (Even Before They’re Sold)

Selling your art is a beautiful milestone, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of someone wanting to bring your creative vision into their home. But before that joyful sale moment arrives, it’s important to prepare your paintings properly.

I always say: Even if no one has ordered your painting yet, be ready.

That readiness will make you feel more professional, more confident, and more aligned with your art business.

Here’s how I lovingly prepare my paintings for sale:

1. Final Check: Is Your Painting Complete?

Before sealing anything, take a calm moment and ask yourself:

Have I put all the ideas I wanted into this piece?

Sometimes, it takes a fresh eye or a little time away to notice small adjustments you want to make. Check for:

  • Any areas that feel unfinished

  • Minor corrections needed

  • Composition balance

  • Color harmony

Once you are truly satisfied move on to the finishing process.

2. Apply Varnish

Varnish protects your painting and enhances its beauty. Choose the right type for your work:

  • Gloss varnish if you want richer color depth and a shiny finish.

  • Matte varnish for a more subtle, modern look.

Important: Make sure your painting is 100% dry before applying varnish. Rushing this can ruin your work!

3. Finishing Touches & Quality Control

  • After varnishing, check for any stray hairs or dust particles stuck to the surface. Gently remove them.

  • Remove any protective tape around the edges if used.

  • Sign your painting, it’s your signature of pride and authenticity.

4. Add Hanging Hardware

Prepare your painting for hanging:

  • Install a hook or wire on the back.

  • Decide whether to add a frame. Some paintings shine on their own, others are elevated by thoughtful framing. Choose based on the style of your work.

5. Create Documentation

Now comes the fun business part! Create a documentation card that includes:

  • Painting title

  • A short, engaging description

  • Canvas measurements

  • Frame type (if applicable)

  • Color palette (this is lovely for customers matching decor)

  • Price

  • Photograph your finished painting before varnishing (to avoid glare) AND after framing it. These images are great for your website, portfolio, and social media. It saves so much time when promoting your work!

Even if no one has ordered yet, having this ready builds your professionalism and saves time later.

6. When an Order Comes In

Now comes the exciting part. packing your painting for delivery!

  • Prepare a Certificate of Authenticity. This adds value and builds trust with collectors.

  • Wrap the painting first with clear wrapping paper to protect the surface.

  • Then wrap it in two rounds of bubble wrap for cushioning.

  • Add foam or sponge corners to protect the edges of the canvas or frame.

  • Place the wrapped painting in a sturdy shipping box.

7. Add a Personal Touch

Don’t miss this part, it makes all the difference:

  • Include a handwritten thank-you note to your customer.

  • Consider adding a small gift. prints of another painting, a sticker, or a postcard of your art. It’s a beautiful way to surprise and delight your buyer.

Final Thoughts

Selling your art isn’t just about creating a beautiful piece. it’s about delivering a professional, joyful experience to your collector.

And remember this: Even if you haven’t sold a piece yet, prepare it as if you will. This mindset helps you embody the artist-businesswoman you are becoming.

I used to paint on my kitchen table and sign my work with a little nervous smile. Now, with every painting I prepare, I feel a sense of pride and intention.
